Canine Physiology And Anatomy

Understanding how a dog’s body works is just as important as understanding behaviour — and that’s exactly what my Canine Physiology & Anatomy qualification provides.

This in-depth training has given me a strong, evidence-based understanding of the structure and function of the canine body, allowing me to tailor training, enrichment, and wellness support safely and effectively for every dog I work with.

What this means for your dog 🐾

My knowledge of canine physiology and anatomy supports:

A clear understanding of the skeletal system, joints, and movement

Awareness of muscle groups, strength, balance, and physical development

Insight into body systems including circulation, respiration, and digestion

How the body and nervous system influence learning, behaviour, and responses

Age-appropriate and breed-appropriate training and activity planning

Why this matters in training & wellbeing

Every dog’s body is different. Puppies, seniors, rescue dogs, and dogs with health considerations all need a carefully adapted approach. With a solid foundation in physiology and anatomy, I can:

Adjust training to suit your dog’s physical capabilities

Avoid unnecessary strain or discomfort

Support confidence, comfort, and long-term wellbeing

Work holistically alongside behaviour, nutrition, and lifestyle needs

A holistic, dog-centred approach 💚

This qualification complements my wider education in behaviour, nutrition, holistic health, massage, and therapy, ensuring your dog’s training and support plan is always:

✔️ Safe

✔️ Ethical

✔️ Individual

✔️ Based on science and welfare

Canine Physiology & Anatomy – FAQs

What is canine physiology and anatomy?

Canine physiology and anatomy focus on how a dog’s body is structured and how it functions. This includes bones, muscles, joints, organs, and body systems — and how they all work together to support movement, behaviour, and overall wellbeing.

Why is this important for dog training?

Training isn’t just about behaviour — it’s about working with your dog’s body safely. Understanding anatomy and physiology allows me to:

Adapt exercises to your dog’s physical ability

Avoid strain, discomfort, or overexertion

Support healthy movement, balance, and confidence

This is especially important for puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with previous injuries or health concerns.

Does this replace veterinary care?

No. This qualification does not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment. It allows me to work knowledgeably, safely, and ethically, and to support your dog alongside veterinary advice where needed.

How does this benefit puppies?

For puppies, understanding growth plates, muscle development, and physical maturity helps ensure training and enrichment are age-appropriate, gentle, and supportive of healthy long-term development.

Is this helpful for senior dogs?

Absolutely. Senior dogs often experience changes in joints, muscles, and mobility. My understanding of canine physiology helps me adapt training and support to prioritise comfort, confidence, and quality of life.

Can this help dogs with behavioural challenges?

Yes. Physical discomfort or limitations can influence behaviour. By understanding the body–mind connection, I can consider physical factors when supporting behaviour, ensuring a truly holistic approach.

How does this fit into your holistic approach?

This qualification complements my education in behaviour, nutrition, massage, and holistic health. Together, they allow me to look at the whole dog — not just symptoms — and tailor support that meets your dog’s individual needs.

Is this included in your 1-to-1 sessions?

Yes. My knowledge of canine physiology and anatomy underpins every session, ensuring training and support are safe, ethical, and fully personalised

Canine Communication

Understanding Dogs Beyond Words.Dogs are constantly communicating with us — through their body language, facial expressions, posture, movement, and subtle behavioural signals. My Canine Communication Diploma has given me a deep, evidence-based understanding of how dogs express emotions, needs, stress, and comfort long before behaviour escalates.

This qualification allows me to read and interpret your dog’s communication accurately, helping me tailor training and support that truly works for your dog as an individual. By understanding what your dog is telling us, we can prevent misunderstandings, reduce anxiety, and build trust-based relationships that last.

Canine communication is at the heart of everything I do — from puppy training and behaviour support to confidence-building and holistic wellbeing. It enables me to work with your dog, not against them, creating calm, positive, and effective outcomes in your own home.

Canine Communication -FAQs

What is canine communication?

Canine communication is how dogs express themselves through body language, facial expressions, posture, movement, vocalisations, and behaviour.

Why is understanding canine communication important?

Many behaviour challenges stem from misunderstood signals. Recognising early signs of stress, fear, or discomfort helps prevent escalation and supports emotional wellbeing.

How does this qualification benefit my dog?

It allows me to adapt training to your dog’s emotional state, learning style, and comfort level — creating calmer, more positive results.

Does this help anxious or reactive dogs?

Yes. Understanding communication is especially valuable for anxious, reactive, fearful, or sensitive dogs, as it helps reduce pressure and build trust.

Is this used alongside training?

Absolutely. Canine communication underpins all of my work — from puppies to senior dogs, training to behaviour support.

Canine Behaviour -FAQs

What is canine behaviour?

Canine behaviour looks at why dogs behave the way they do. It considers communication, learning, emotions, past experiences, environment, and physical wellbeing to understand what a dog is trying to tell us through their behaviour.

What types of behaviour do you support?

I support a wide range of behaviours, including:

Pulling on the lead

Recall difficulties

Jumping up

Anxiety and fear-based behaviours

Reactivity towards dogs or people

Resource guarding

Settling and impulse control

Confidence building for nervous dogs

All support is tailored to the individual dog and household.

Do you use punishment or aversive methods?

No. I use force-free, reward-based, and welfare-focused methods. My approach prioritises trust, understanding, and emotional wellbeing, ensuring your dog feels safe and supported throughout the process.

Can behaviour be linked to health or discomfort?

Yes. Behaviour and physical wellbeing are closely connected. Pain, discomfort, nutritional imbalances, or stress can all influence behaviour. Where appropriate, I will recommend veterinary input and adapt training to support your dog holistically.

How long does it take to see improvements?

Every dog is different. Some changes can be seen quickly, while others take time. Progress depends on factors such as the dog’s history, age, environment, consistency, and emotional state. I focus on sustainable, long-term improvement, not quick fixes.

Do you work with rescue dogs?

Absolutely. I have extensive experience supporting rescue and rehomed dogs. I understand the challenges that can come with unknown histories and work at your dog’s pace to build trust, confidence, and security.

Will you come to my home?

Yes. I offer 1-to-1 sessions in your own home, where your dog feels most comfortable. Working in a familiar environment removes barriers to learning and allows behaviour to be addressed in real-life situations.

Do you work with puppies as well as adult dogs?

Yes. Early behaviour support is key to preventing future issues. I work with puppies to build strong foundations in confidence, communication, and positive learning, as well as supporting adolescent and adult dogs.

Is canine behaviour training just about the dog?

No — owners play a vital role too. I provide clear guidance, education, and ongoing support so you feel confident, empowered, and fully involved in your dog’s progress.

How does behaviour support fit into your holistic approach?

My behaviour work is supported by qualifications in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, anxiety, massage, and holistic health. This allows me to consider the whole dog — body, mind, lifestyle, and environment.

Understanding Canine Anxiety

I hold a Diploma in Understanding Canine Anxiety, enabling me to support dogs who experience stress, fear, or emotional discomfort in their daily lives.

Anxiety in dogs can develop for many reasons, including separation, noise sensitivity, past experiences, changes in routine, or lack of confidence. It may present as pacing, vocalising, destructive behaviour, withdrawal, or heightened reactivity.

My work focuses on:

Identifying the underlying causes of anxiety

Supporting emotional regulation and calm

Building confidence through positive, reward-based methods

Creating bespoke plans suited to your dog’s individual needs

I take a holistic, compassionate approach, working at your dog’s pace and prioritising their wellbeing at every step. My aim is not just to manage behaviour, but to help your dog feel safer, more secure, and more confident in their world.

If you’re concerned about your dog’s anxiety or would like professional, understanding support, I’d be happy to help.

How do I know if my dog is anxious?

Signs of anxiety can include pacing, trembling, excessive barking or whining, destructive behaviour, withdrawal, toileting indoors, over-attachment, or heightened reactions to sounds, people, or other dogs. Anxiety isn’t always obvious and can be easily misunderstood as “bad behaviour”.

What causes canine anxiety?

Anxiety can develop for many reasons, including separation from owners, noise sensitivities, past experiences, lack of early socialisation, changes in routine, rehoming, illness, or genetic predisposition.

Is this the same as dog training?

This service focuses on your dog’s emotional wellbeing, not just obedience. While behaviour may improve as anxiety reduces, the primary goal is to help your dog feel safe, calm, and secure.

Do you use force-free methods?

Absolutely. All support is positive, reward-based, and fear-free. I never use aversive tools or methods that increase stress or anxiety.

Will this help rescue or rehomed dogs?

Yes. Anxiety support is particularly beneficial for rescue dogs who may have experienced trauma, instability, or sudden life changes.

How long does it take to see improvements?

Every dog is different. Some show small improvements quickly, while others need more time and ongoing support. Progress is always at your dog’s pace.

Can this work alongside vet or behaviourist support?

Yes. Anxiety support complements veterinary care and behaviour plans and can be part of a wider wellbeing approach.

Is this suitable for puppies?

Yes. Early support can prevent anxiety becoming ingrained and helps puppies build confidence from the start.

 Elder Dog - FAQs

Supporting your dog through their golden years

What age is considered an elder or senior dog?

This varies by breed and size, but generally dogs are considered senior from around 7 years old, with larger breeds often ageing earlier and smaller breeds later.

What changes might I notice as my dog ages?

You may see changes in mobility, energy levels, hearing, eyesight, digestion, sleep patterns, or behaviour. Some dogs may also become more anxious or sensitive to change.

Is behaviour change normal in older dogs?

Yes. Cognitive decline, discomfort, or sensory loss can affect behaviour. Changes such as confusion, restlessness, clinginess, or irritability are common and manageable with the right support.

Can training still help an elder dog?

Absolutely. Training for senior dogs focuses on comfort, confidence, enrichment, and quality of life, not obedience. Gentle, positive guidance can greatly improve wellbeing.

How does holistic support benefit older dogs?

A holistic approach considers your dog’s physical, emotional, and mental health, helping to reduce stress, support mobility, improve comfort, and maintain independence for as long as possible.

Can you help with mobility or stiffness?

Yes. I offer support strategies including gentle exercises, movement advice, environmental adjustments, and complementary techniques tailored to your dog’s abilities.

Do older dogs experience anxiety?

They can. Age-related changes, pain, or confusion may increase anxiety. Understanding their communication signals allows support to be adapted sensitively.

Is your support suitable for dogs with medical conditions?

Yes. I work alongside veterinary advice and adapt sessions carefully for dogs with arthritis, sensory loss, or chronic conditions.

Do you work in the dog’s home?

Yes. All support is 1-to-1 in your own home, reducing stress and allowing your dog to feel safe and comfortable.

How can I best support my ageing dog day to day?

Small changes make a big difference — routine, mental enrichment, gentle movement, comfort-focused environments, and understanding their communication cues.

Pet Bereavement Support

Pet Bereavement Support

Losing a beloved pet can be one of the most heartbreaking experiences, and the grief that follows is deeply personal and often misunderstood. As a qualified Pet Bereavement Counsellor, I offer compassionate, non-judgemental support for those coping with loss or preparing to say goodbye. In a calm, safe and understanding space, you’ll be supported to process your emotions at your own pace, honour the bond you shared, and feel less alone during an incredibly difficult time.

What is pet bereavement counselling?

Pet bereavement counselling offers emotional support to help you cope with the loss of a beloved pet or to prepare for an upcoming goodbye. It provides a safe, understanding space to talk openly about your feelings, memories and the bond you shared — without judgement or pressure.

Who is this support for?

This service is for anyone affected by pet loss, including:

Adults grieving a pet

Children struggling to understand loss

Families preparing for euthanasia

Owners experiencing guilt, shock or prolonged grief

There is no “right” way to grieve — all emotions are valid.

Do I need to have already lost my pet?

No. Many people seek support before a loss, especially when facing a difficult decision or caring for an elderly or unwell pet. Anticipatory grief is very real, and support can be incredibly helpful during this time.

My pet wasn’t a dog — can you still help?

Absolutely. The bond between humans and animals goes far beyond species. I support grief relating to all pets, including dogs, cats and small animals.

What happens during a session?

Sessions are calm, gentle and led at your pace. You can talk, reflect, share memories or simply sit with your feelings. There is no pressure to “fix” anything — the focus is on support, understanding and emotional wellbeing.

Is pet grief really as valid as other types of grief?

Yes — completely. Pet loss grief is often deeply felt and sometimes misunderstood by others. Your grief matters, and your bond deserves to be honoured.

Can this help children?

Yes. Pet loss is often a child’s first experience of grief. Support can help them understand their feelings in a healthy, age-appropriate way and create space for questions, emotions and remembrance.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. All sessions are private and confidential, offering a safe space where you can speak freely and openly.
